ONE CHANCE
Ever since I claimed straight-edge for my 23rd birthday this past January, I’ve really been looking for ways to better myself as a person in regards to the choices I make in life. For awhile now I’ve gone down the path of being an indie-minded, freelance artist, living almost like a bohemian. I’ve embarked on a path to making positive, healthy decisions. All my life, I’ve emphasized on being open-minded to other people and accepting them for who they are. Especially now that I’m sXe, it’s not my place to all of a sudden start preaching to others.
I recently discovered a site called “One Life One Chance”. It’s founded by H2O vocalist Toby Morse and it’s about living a drug-free life. Some of the people who inspire me; Hayley Williams of Paramore and pro-wrestler CM Punk, actually have made testimonials towards One Life One Chance. They both echoed the same sentiments I have about living life. Through this, I also found about a concept called “PMA”.
PMA is “positive mental attitude”. I realized that I had been carrying myself in that manner even before I knew there was terminology for it. Being positive is infectious! I can’t tell you how much of a bummer and a downer it is when I see friends of mine on Facebook light up their status updates with just sad and depressing, most of the time personal, information. No one can deny that they want to be happy, so why do that to yourself and grab for others pity? I made it a point to make my updates humorous, self-depreciative, and full of misadventure, because I feel that laughter is the best medicine. If you can’t laugh at yourself, then you’re taking yourself way too seriously, in my opinion.
I’m not one to complain about my personal problems to other people simply because they don’t have anything to do with it. Which is why I don’t use Facebook or Twitter as a forum to vent and cultivate feel-good responses. My friends have enough on their plate and have their own lives to live. Besides, if you can’t feel good about yourself, how can you expect other people to do it for you?
In light of all these acronyms being thrown around like PMA and B.O.Y (Beware Of You), I’ve kind of come up with one of my own.
